“Firefly: The Game” Pirates & Bounty Hunters Expansion
With Firefly The Game (and Blue Sun), the game, while competitive, it’s kind of like golf or bowling, in that one competes with other players to win the game, but there is no direct interaction, for the most part (yes, you can hire disgruntled crew or move a reaver cutter or imperial cruiser, but that’s about it). What the Pirates and Bounty Hunters expansion does is to include direct competition into it.
We haven’t played so much with everything in the expansion yet, since we’re enjoying the regular game and don’t particularly care to play with the attacking each other so much. But, perhaps, we’ll want to spice things up and start attacking each other.
Nevertheless, even if one is not so keen on attacking other players, there are still useful elements of this expansion that one need not attack other players in order to benefit.
Two new ships and new captains
There are not only two new captains, but there are also two new ships. One ship is very quick – it moves 8 spaces on a fuel burn, which allows it to get to a lot of places on the regular board and it is certainly very useful with the extra spaces in the Blue Sun expansion. Of course, it has its limits: it can only carry four crew and only four cargo slots. On the other hand, the other new ship can carry up to fifteen slots in its cargo hold, but moves at only four spaces per fuel burn. It is also neat that there are adjusted ships, rather than just the standard Firefly class ships that come with the regular game.
There are five new supply cards for each of the supply planets, with some neat gear included, such as Early’s Combat Armor (in Space Bazaar) and “Sash’s” Hand Cannon (in Regina), both of which have two skills, as well as ten crew who also have two skills each.
There are also five new job cards for each contact, all of which are specific to this game.
Although this expansion is neat in that it provides for players to directly interact with each other, moreso than the base game, even if one doesn’t, there are still good captains, ships, crew, and gear that add to the base game. Of course, if you would like to directly interact with other players, you can certainly make use of those jobs, cortex alerts, set-ups, and stories, and bounties.
